Elisabeth Joulia studied at Fine Arts in Clermont Ferrand before moving to Paris where she studied painting, sculpture and fresco. She was taught ceramics by Jean Lerat, who passed on to her his passion for earthenware. Fascinated by stoneware, Joulia settled in La Borne, famous for its pottery tradition, where she led a simple life inspired by nature. Her works are organic, expressive and refined sculptures. Her approach to ceramic really impacted French ceramic of the 1950s.
